On the Nature of Natural Magic

So I've been miserable sick for going on 48 hours, so don't have a lot of minis progress to show you.

Hopefully that state won't last too long.  We'll see.

But I have noticed that the fever-addled brain is a very creative and productive brain.
Maybe it is making up for the fact that your body refuses to do anything but drain & ache.
But I think it may more likely be that this sick-misery-fever-head pounding is similar to what shamanic traditions have always understood: bring the body close to death & the brain in an altered state and you get some fun results. So you'll have to tell me if this idea I'll present is fun stuff or if it's the kind of odd weirdness that makes sense in a dream and nonsense when you wake up.  Speaking of, my illness-enhanced dream last night was awesome.. I was searching on hands & knees in a backyard garden and found a trail of snail-sized sauropods, looking like micro brontosaurs with spiky snail shells on their back, and their flesh was like that of slugs & snails.  Too cool.  Back on track..

I've mentioned I like to write game rules, and I've been working on rules for skirmish games that should work in any genre and I've been working on rules for 15mm element based unit warfare.  I hoped to come up with a magic system that would work in both, even though they use a different mechanic.  I think I have.

The Compass of Magic

So this is for the basic Magic System for miniatures combat.  It is aiming to be Beer & Pretzel with Interesting Options: a balance between simple & not overpowered and characterful.

I play tested a fantasy skirmish game recently which I liked a lot.  But the magic system was very simple. Fine for what it is, but I want something with more options.  However, something like the magic in Warhammer is too powerful and too much variety for the more simple games I want to make.  Plus there is no way it could work in a skirmish game, considering the power output of some spells. So I want balance but I also want something with flavor.

There will be other magic traditions added later, but to start with I will focus just on Natural Magic, which would be the basic magic and the other magic traditions as options.

Natural Magic dates back to the oldest shamanic roots of the prehistoric times. Sometimes this is called 'elemental magic' of the four elements, but this is an over-simplification as you will see.

Natural Magic is divided into 10 aspects of nature: 4 Major Aspects and 6 Minor Aspects, though in truth none are more powerful than another, but the Major Aspects pull the focus of those who use magic so that they are unable to stray far from the Major Aspect of Magic which guides them.

The Major Aspects of Magic are associated with the four cardinal directions:

Air: North
Fire: East
Earth: South
Water: West

Between Air and Fire there is Sand Magic
Between Fire and Earth there is Lava Magic
Between Earth and Water there is Mud Magic
Between Water and Air there is Ice Magic

Across the four polar opposites there are also adjacent intersectional magics:

At the intersection of Air and Earth there is Lightning Magic
At the intersection of Fire and Water there is Steam Magic

The intersectional magics while powerful can be extremely difficult and dangerous for the wielder.

There are many paths to walk for those who follow magic. Generally speaking, wielders of magic come in three power tiers. Some focus in one aspect of magic, others seek a wider breadth of knowledge.

In game terms, you can think of this as a level 1, 2 or 3 level magic caster.

Every magic caster of Natural Magic is centered in one of the ten Aspects of Magic.

A level 1 caster has but one option:
Initiate of (Aspect) : The Caster has 1 level 1 spell in their chosen aspect.

A level 2 caster has a few options:

Adept of (Aspect): The caster has 1 level 2 spell in their chosen aspect.
Scholar of (Aspect): The caster has 2 level 1 spell in their chosen aspect.
Journeyman of (Aspect and Aspect): The caster has 1 level 1 spell in their chosen aspect and 1 adjacent aspect.

A level 3 caster has many options:

Summoner of (Aspect)*: The caster has 1 level 3 spell of their chosen aspect.
* The exception is a level 3 caster of Steam is called an Artificer.
Grande Scholar of (Aspect): The caster has 1 level 2 and 1 level 1 spell in their chosen aspect.
Grande Adept of (Aspect): The caster has 3 level 1 spells in the chosen aspect
Grande Transmuter of (Aspect and Aspect): The caster has 2 level 1 spells in their chosen aspect and 1 level 1 spell in an adjacent aspect.
Rogue Adept of (Aspect, Aspect and Aspect): The caster has 3 level 1 spells in three different but adjacent aspects.

When given titles, the first Aspect listed will always be the primary chosen aspect which if the caster is more powerful in one aspect than another, it will be in their primary aspect.

It must be noted that if choosing the path of the Rogue Adept the chosen Aspects must be adjacent Aspects but not include more than One Major Aspect, for the Cardinal Aspects are too diametrically opposed to be mastered by a mortal.

Examples:

A level 1 caster might be an Initiate of Fire or an Initiate of Ice

A level 2 caster might be an Adept of Air or a Scholar of Lava, or a Journeyman of Mud and Water.

A level 3 caster might be a Summoner of Water, or a Summoner of Lightning .. or
A level 3 caster might be a Grande Scholar of Ice .. or
A level 3 caster might be a Grande Adept of Fire ...or
A level 3 caster might be a Grande Transmuter of Steam and Fire ...or
A level 3 caster might be a Rogue Adept of Fire, Sand and Lava or Rogue Adept of Air, Lightning and Sand
but he could not be a Rogue Adept of Earth, Mud and Water because this includes two Major Aspects.

...................................

As you can see, a level 1 caster will always have 1 spell, a level 2 may have 2 level 1 spells or only 1 of a higher level, and a level 3 caster may have 3 (level 1), 2 (a level 2 & level1) or 1 (level 3)spell.

Spells:

I have started compiling a spell list for each aspect.

Each Aspect will have 3 level 1 spells, 1 level 2 spell and 1 level 3 spell.
The level 3 spell is always a summoning of an elemental, except in the case of Steam, which is a repair ability for a construct which the caster starts the game with.

Examples of Spells:

AIR

L1. Gust: target is slowed by 2” and has missile fire ranges halved.
L1. Guiding wind: target friendly may re-roll failed missile fire
L1. Protecting Breeze: Any successful missile hit against the caster must be re-rolled.

L2. Tornado: target is moved d6” in random direction.

L3. Summon Air Elemental
When the Elemental is not summoned the Summoner has +1 to all stats and a bonus to dispell

FIRE

L1. Flametongue: Target's melee weapon damage is increased by 2.
L1. Gout of Flame: 6” range: missile attack +2
L1. Firestrike: 12” range: missle attack +1

L2. Rain of Fire: target friendly missile fire does double damage.

L3. Summon Elemental
When the Elemental is not summoned the Summoner has +1 to all stats and a bonus to dispell
..............................

What do you think?
Have any ideas for spells?
I'd love to hear them.  I have almost 2/3 of the list full, but I may not keep them all.

There will also be a counter-spell ability, which will have modifiers for level and for direct opposite caster aspects: casters of Fire versus Water have an easier time canceling each other's power than say, a caster of Ice versus Water.

See the long odd stuff you get when all I can physically manage is typing instead of painting?

And as long as we're talking about the elements... like Earth, Wind & Fire, this is too fun to pass up...

Enjoy!

Two Warlords & Their Finest Warriors Face Off : Muppet Saga

Been awhile since a 'Muppet Saga' update. Muppet Saga is my project to run the game Saga with the War of Ashes miniatures from Zombiesmith. The creatures remind me of Muppets, hence 'Muppet Saga'.

When they had their last sale I picked up some of the Vidaar, which are the enemy of the Elvorix.
The Elvorix I plan to run using the Welsh faction rules, to take advantage of the wild pig cavalry miniatures I converted.  But they need an opposing force, so I have some Vidaar now ready to run as Vikings.

They all still need paint, but here's how the leaders & elites look opposed to each other:

Elvorix vrs. Vidaar

The warlords are on 25mm bases, to give room for each to have their bannerman.

Close up of the Vidaar warlord at right and a Vidaar soothsayer.
I have an Elvorix Augur and so I'm toying with ideas on how to add a simple magic system to Saga.

Elvorix 'Greybucks': the Hearthguard. Some great detail in these delicate minis.

Vidaar counterparts: Lungshyld, the Hearthguard.

I have enough for two 6pt armies, plus the option of a magic user each.

The Welsh Elvorix will have:

Warlord
Hearthguard foot
Warriors, mounted* (could divide into 2 hearthguard units)
3x Warriors foot
1 Levy

The Vidaar Vikings will have:

Warlord
1 Hearthguard
1 Hearthguard Berzerker
3x Warriors
1 Levy

Converting a Dark Elf Runner for the Chaos Cup Legacy Team

I can't resist these kinds of things.
A Legacy Team is when a bunch of different people all pitch in one miniature that forms a team. One of them chosen at random will get the team, which is nice, but the real fun is the concept.
So when I found out that Chaos Cup was organizing a Legacy Team, I figured I'd join in.  I already have to paint a new team for myself, what's one more?

The team selected is Dark Elf, with the stipulation of "no current GW Dark Elf Blood Bowl team miniatures" and for the remaining needed miniatures, a Dark Elf Runner looked like the most interesting.  At first I figured I'd convert one from Dark Eldar Wyche plastics, but after some looking I found a miniature from Reaper that just screamed 'make me into a Blood Bowl mini!"  So I did.

Here is the result:

(Click for larger)
I'll probably add a shoulder pad too.

The original Reaper mini:

So I removed the weapons, the satchel & strap, cut back the skull and gave her a football, then changed the guarding arm angle a bit and rebuilt up her rear after removing the satchel takes some of it with it.

I just love converting!

So she's ready for painting now.

UPDATE: IRON MASK DWARF MUSKETEERS

A couple posts ago I alerted everyone to the very fun Kickstarter for Dwarf Musketeers.

At time of posting, this has only a few hours left and has really shot up in the last day!

If you haven't missed it yet, I'll just point out that at any pledge of $59 or more you now get a lot of free miniatures! The stretch goals got lowered...

Just for the extra free minis you get:

2 Dwarf Musketeers
Dwarf in the Iron Mask
Dwarf Cardinal
Dwarf King
Rat-like Roquefort
Mi'lady Elf
Jussac the Ogre

Those free miniatures would already cost more than $59 on their own.

This is turning out to be quite the deal!

and it's on it's way to the set of extra hands with different items, like tankard, grenade, handkerchief etc
after that are a some Halfling characters & the Queen.. fun!

You also don't have to wait forever for the majority of the items.. seems that the Dwarves & Ogres are already set to be ready for September, with the other characters being released in waves: December, Feb & summer for the last ones.

So check out the Kickstarter, it ends soon!

And if you missed it, you'll still be able to buy the minis when released and sounds like they have plans to extend the line too. Can't wait!

Here are the minis that are (with $59+ pledge) are Free, or $7.25 each if the stretch goal doesn't stretch:

* Both Free

* Both Free

* Both Free

* Both Free

Still Stretch as of posting.

All For Dwarf and Dwarves For All! Iron Mask Dwarf Musketeer Kickstarter

This one nearly slipped by me.  My Bank Account may wish it had.
But that's the brilliant thing about Kickstarter: so many unique fun ideas are possible.

Like dwarves?
Like dashing adventure?
Like charming characters called Musketeers? (despite they never seem to ever use a musket.. ever.
Really never understood that one. It's like calling Jedi Knights "Blastermen". I digress.)

If you answered yes to any of those and especially if to all of them check out Iron Mask Miniatures' Dwarf Musketeer Kickstarter.  It has only a few days left!

The miniatures are nothing short (haha, get it?) of awesome.  They have that character-saturated style of 80's GW Dwarf characters, with the modern advantage of lots of separate heads and hands to create just the dwarf you want in the pose you want.

The bodies remind me of how Rakham Confrontation miniatures often are: ball joint neck, socket head, for easy posing options. Excellent.

Two sets of dwarf musketeer heads: fancy floppy hats (above) and variety of styles (below):

As add-ons they even have some dwarves with integrated heads, so they can have longer traditional dwarf beards, and those ringlet wigs.. those will come back in style someday, just you wait.

There are also Ogre Guards, likely in the employ of Cardinal Rich-dwarf:

Ogres also have separate heads and hands so you can get a lot of variety.
"You are the Brute Squad!"

The Reward sets also come with a pdf of skirmish rules.

I'm a sucker for skirmish games, a sucker for dwarves.. yeah, you know the drill.

These dwarves would also make a great warband for a skirmish game like Songs of Blades & Heroes, Mordheim, Legends of the High Seas, etc.

Most of the sets also come with a free couple of dwarf musketeers, a dwarf in the Iron Mask, and since the project has been funded before August 3rd, there will be a free Cardinal Dwarf too!  It has been funded- I have the honor of kicking in the pledge that edged it across the finish line.

They look like a lot of fun to paint, so if they look fun to you, check out their kickstarter.. not much time left!

Middle Earth Nature Walk: Rangers & Woses

I recently completed a bit of Mithril Miniatures for a client's extensive Mithril collection.

I do love Mithril Miniatures. They have such smooth elegant lines and realistic, not excessive, detail.

I once had a Wood Elf army for Warhammer that was about 2/3 Mithril minis.
Never should have sold those.

So this set was Rangers & Woses: two different approaches to living in the wild.

The challenge here was to match the colors & styles of the previous painter, who had painted a lot of these, so that the new additions would match.

It can be a very interesting process to duplicate someone else's style, it gets you analyzing and thinking about the process more than proceeding on your own.
And matching colors, finding the right blends to match is fun.
For a few years in university I worked as a picture framer, where you deal a lot with color theory, but never more than when someone brought in a scratched frame and you'd mix paints and inks to cover the damage.
Trying to match a color is one of the best ways to really understand the make up of the color.

So, to the Mithril:

Woses

The example one didn't have a spear, so I got to paint the wood staves in my favorite method.
The leader's decorative paint was inspired by Magwa. Couldn't resist.

Apparently, they do a lot of walking!

Rangers

I do love how Mithril Miniatures handles cloaks!

I like how these two interact...

Woman, "Why, that's no way to hold a child!
Man, "huh..what?"
Woman, "dear Iluvatar, but that is an ugly child..."

Nasty Hobbitsess

The companions to the dwarves in the last update, a host of hobbits!

These are all old oop classic citadel halflings.

A real joy to paint. One of the things I like about painting commissions is that I get to paint things I otherwise wouldn't, like a bunch of hard to find miniatures! It really had me thinking, and not for the first time, what is wrong with GW? I swear that their decisions can only adequately be explained by a desire to socially condition gamers:

GW exec "They want what? Squats? Zoats? Fimir? New Blood Bowl sculpts? Man O'War? Hell, I haven't seen a fimir around here in ages, we stopped making them and all the rest of that stuff. Why? To make more shelf room for Space Marines that's why! Yeah yeah, I understand shelf room doesn't matter much in the age of internet orders, but it's Space Marines, they'll love em! What? Well maybe they'll stop loving that other stuff once they forget about them- just keep showing the new, limited range we're plugging: that'll do the trick.  Yeah yeah, I know the other stuff would sell, but not as well as the big dogs we push, if we continue to remove that other stuff they'll have no choice but to buy what we want them to buy!"

Really, it's all I can think of: Space Marines & certain items, like 40k in general have a greater profit margin, so there must be a belief that eliminating the *less* profitable choices will increase sales in the *more* profitable.  Nonsense.  Just because something sold is less profitable, doesn't mean it isn't worth selling- if it does sell, then they made money, and expanded the customer base & customer happiness, which will create more & more loyal customers as time goes on.  It seems completely illogical to think that if people can't buy a new GW Blood Bowl team, or new (or old classic they chose to stop making) Epic armies that instead these folks will just play 40k instead.  Some might, but I'm guessing most won't: they'll head to Impact minis, Greebo, Willy, Gaspez-Arts, Neomics, convert their own, or more for Blood Bowl, or maybe pick up Dropzone Commander for their small-scale fix.

What if all businesses did this?  Should Coca-Cola stop producing Dr.Pepper simply because it doesn't sell as much as Coke? An absurd idea. Without the choice of Dr.Pepper some may choose Coke, but many might chose a replacement that isn't something they produce.

I'm just a small unimportant little business, much like a hobbit, so far from me to know everything that goes on in the concerns of the 'Big People' but my common hobbit sense says people will be happier with your stew if it has potatoes, onion, celery, and tomatoes in it, rather than just load it with nothing but potatoes just because it's the favorite and it's easier to plant nothing but potatoes.

A lot of the new stuff GW has come out with recently is great, but people still want these classic sculpts, as well as other things, and I can't help thinking GW is crazy for not continuing to make them available and maintain and expand the older games many still love.

And this is sometimes where my mind wanders as I paint some great classic sculpts that are out of production and can't for the life of me think why they should be.

Mental meanderings /off.

... Hobbits!

The fancy guard was missing his weapon, so I supplied him with a spear.
So much character in these sculpts, hard for me to pick a favorite, but I'm leaning toward the one at the upper right corner.

Dwarves! Dwarves everywhere!

There does seem to be a lot of dwarves around lately...

GW's released the new set for The Hobbit, which isn't tempting me much. The dwarves are really accurately sculpted it seems, compared to the characters in the movies, but the goblins I just don't care for.  They're more like post apocalyptic mutants to my eye than goblins- not that I won't enjoy the movie (!) but for minis..
I am just not drawn to the radioactive defective mutant look.  There's also the Stonehaven Dwarves, from the kickstarter, which are making their way to mailboxes now- mine came today! But I've had such a busy day I didn't take the time to even open it yet- crazy- but I will tomorrow.

But the dwarves I'm writing about are a set of 6 I just finished on commission.  They're from Fenryll and I really enjoyed painting them.  Done in 'Squad Class', my starting standard I offer, but I might have spent a bit more time than called for in some aspects just because I really did enjoy painting them.

Unlike the Warhammer style dwarves, these have more human-realistic proportions, with anatomy such as necks, and upper legs.  Very odd, I know.

Click for larger:

I imagine the one with the torch being the leader, so I gave him 'old guy' hair.
The big red haired fellow looks like the berserker of the lot, but they all look pretty dangerous.
The one with the lantern: not common for a dwarf to shave his beard and sport the big biker mustache.
I am convinced that that one must be the dwarf version of the bass player from Spinal Tap, so I gave him dark brown hair.

I've always liked dwarves.  It seems they inspire either great affection or rejection by people: love or hate.
When I was a kid, and read the Lord of the Rings the first time, I liked the elves the best.  I still like elves, but dwarves really grew on me over the years and they're now my favorite.  The muted colors, stoic nature, great pathos of the underdog... they're just cool. This commission got me excited to paint some of the Stonehaven Dwarves, just don't know when I'll squeeze in the time.. beyond work painting I have the next VSF campaign, this time on Earth's Moon, gearing up, and I need to add some more Quar to my forces.
So stay tuned for a lot of that in the months to come, and wish me luck, because my map placement is about the worst you could find yourself in!

In honor of the lantern dwarf: enjoy!

Geoffo & Moose: 2 Adventurers Against the World

The Dynamic Duo, the pair of Big & Small, Old & New are finished.
(Click for larger)

The halfling is Geoffo Timbershank, a name he earned by losing his leg in the Goblin Wars.

In the thick of the fighting, hard pressed, Geoffo was looking into the snarling face of his own doom.
A nasty goblin, with two wicked blades had cut him many times and just disarmed him, his sturdy broad short sword lying out of reach.  But just then he heard a bellow from one of the Ogre Mercenaries and out out of the corner of his eye he saw an Ogre hatchet lobbed his way.  It was a large and heavy weapon, and Geoffo needed two hands to wield it.  But he did so, and just in time to bury it in the goblin's skull.

The Ogre had problems of his own, dealing with a raging troll.  Both were wounded, but as everyone knows, a wounded troll is not wounded for long.  Geoffo ran to the battling brutes, raised the hatchet high in the air and swung down hard on the troll's foot!  The creature roared in pain, lashing out with a rusty cleaver that sliced Geoffo's leg clean off. But the distraction was just long enough for the Ogre to thrust his battle spear up through the Troll's neck and out the top of his skull.

After the battle, the Ogre went to find out if the halfling had survived.  He had, though it was a close call.

"I thank you for the loan of your axe, Ogre." Geoffo said weakly.

"I'm called Moose," he said, "and I'm grateful I gave it to you.  Keep it."

"Thank you, but I think I'm not well suited to it."  Geoffo replied.

"Hrmmm. Then perhaps you should use the haft for a new leg. It is lucky I think."

From that moment on the two would be inseparable, seeking adventure and battle.

Good News for Fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Miniatures & Saving Money

Passing on some good info... Tin Man Miniatures is having a sale- and a deep one at that.

40% off everything.  Hard to complain about that.

In my opinion, no one does Edgar Rice Burroughs inspired minis better than Tin Man, I just wish there were more of them ;)  Prices tend to be fairly high, but I think that's to be expected for high quality small boutique miniatures producers.  It's not an inexpensive endeavor for a small outfit.  With the sale prices, it puts the cost at about what you'd expect to pay for online retailer discounted Reaper Miniatures, so this is a great moment to snag some!

With my Prehistoric Pulp project going, I couldn't resist getting the Jungle Lord and Cave Girl .. great for Tarzan and Jane types in any era pulp setting, but should fit in nicely in Prehistory too!

And of course the Barsoom items are great...

Great Stuff!

The sale goes through November 6th. So treat yourself!

Oh Yeah? Well My God Can Beat Up Your God! Kickstarting the Dominion of the Gods

It's getting to where you need a very strong machete-shaped debit card to get through the tangled kickstarter jungle, but here is another I am feeling has good potential: Dominion of the Gods.

Odd thing is, I already wrote most of this game about six years ago.  Not that I did anything with it, and not that it's exactly the same, and not that I'm not sure others have had the idea too.  But as one of my favorite bands said, everything I do been's done before, every sentence in my head, someone else has said (see the bottom of this update).  The idea is rich for harvest: The Mythologies of Humanity.

As a kid (yeah, as a kid, because you'd never have such conversations at this point in your life, right?  Yeah, right) how often did you have heated discussions about who would win in a fight: Batman or Spiderman? The Hulk or The Thing?  etc. And guess what? They made a game for that: heroclix.

This is similar: Who would win in a fight Thor or Ares? Which Mythology has the stronger monster, braver heroes? The struggle for religious dominance is a bloody affair which goes beyond the meager struggles of mankind, right up the ladder to the Gods themselves.

Being a huge fan of Mythologies, this immediately sparks my interest.

It appears to have the same introduction point that games like Warmachine & Hordes does: a leader, a hero, a couple creatures and a very big creature and you're good to go.  Then it can be extended for bigger games with more of the same and units of mortal men.  The theme is a strong one and there is so much room to expand, the starting point to this is only scratching the surface, so no worries that they wouldn't have room to expand the concept.

The first mini for this I saw was the Cyclops:
Damn that's fun.

My first thought was 'What an awesome Blood Bowl Ogre that would make!'
I still may prefer Ray Harryhausen's Cyclops, but your first loves will always be dear to your heart.
This guy is cool in spades though and will make a great centerpiece to an army.

The Minotaur is also top notch: easily one of the best I've seen.
I like his pose, hunched and menacing rather than the static baseball bat gripped axe that's all-too common.

So the miniatures are top quality and the game & it's theme look good & ripe for expanding, what do you get for your cash?

They recently upped the reward for a basic pledge, making it now quite a good deal:

Let's compare this to Privateer Press's Hordes, since that's likely the most equatable comparison:

A Skorne battlebox gets you a heavy beast, 2 light beasts, and a leader, for $50 retail.  Add a heavy beast kit: $35 ($50 if you want the Bronzeback, which you probably would but we won't for this purpose) and a Void Spirit solo for $10.  That comes to $95 retail, or about $76 with online discounters.  So this still comes in at quite a good value: both in cost and quality.

Currently they've got Norse, Celt, and Greek committed to, and just announced Cthulhu Mythos!
That's got to be of interest to any who love the Lovecraftian creatures.  And further myths are planned to get involved, such as Hindu, which sounds very fun to me!

There's only just under 2 weeks left at the time of writing this, and they've only just passed 1/3 of their goal.
That is worrisome to me.  I think maybe they set a goal that was too high and daunting but it is a big undertaking, so I can't say their target fund isn't realistically needed to make it happen.  There are more and more kickstarters happening, which means more competition for people's hobby money.  Add to that, a lot of bigger companies are using it now, which I don't have a problem with, but it does mean that those companies can set a lower funding goal, just needing money to 'prime the pump' and gauge interest level, where a small company that doesn't have a pool of resources to draw on has to make sure the finish line is fully funded before committing to start: it's a different set of conditions for them.  And so there are not a lot of stretch goals and freebies with this one, but I think what you get is a good bargain as-is, and the chance to bring the fun settings of Mythologies to the tabletop and see who's got the stronger pantheon!
- and there are some fun freebies, like a special coin and the chance to buy a nice limited amazon.

Even if you are not sure you'd like the game or find others to play it, the miniatures are great quality and could be used to double dip into many systems, so I doubt anyone wouldn't get their money's worth.
Money where their mouth is: I'm backing this, it does look exciting to me.

So check it out for yourself, and see if $55 (or more) isn't worth 6 nice minis, many of them big monsters, and the chance to bring some of humanity's most interesting mythologies to life.

The kickstarter is here:  Dominion of the Gods

..................................................................

Speaking of expanding into more mythologies, someone on Lead Adventure Forum asked if they'd have a Christian myth faction too, perhaps a bit tongue in cheek, but why not? In the game I was writing within this theme and idea I compiled info, stats and game-abilities for over a dozen mythologies, Christian being one of them. At first you might think it doesn't have much potential, since they don't have warrior gods and big monsters, and what's Jesus' special ability going to be? As Thor calls down lightning, Jesus will do what? create a magical barrier of bread and fish? The water walking could be useful for crossing river terrain, and while not too useful in a one-off game, the 3 day resurrection could prove valuable in a campaign setting!

But Biblical Angels are serious bad asses.  Not to be underestimated, and not nice at all.  All those modern women saying they have angels looking out for them, they better hope looking out doesn't mean looking for

But monsters? I guess most would think it'd be a boring faction, but check this out!
My friend emailed me this picture, it was left on his door.  That looks like a warband right there!
(thanks for the picture Dan! you well know the odd stuff that makes my day!)
Are these really the types who used to complain about D&D? This looks right out of the Monster Manual!

I want to play this faction! A dragon? Hell yeah! No bigger and stronger big monster than that!
That winged lion must be a pretty good monster too.  Flight is a real tactical advantage on the table.
The ability to out maneuver your opponent and bring a powerful strike where your enemy is weak is worth a lot more than a more powerful creature. That multi-headed flying leopard is an odd one.  Well, these mythologies do get a bit weird, but maybe it's good against units: not as powerful of an attack but a lot more lesser attacks is perfect to counter players who bring a lot of infantry spam. This is looking like a flexible list!
The bear is an odd one... I'm thinking it doesn't really fit the theme well.  But not every faction is going to appeal to you 100%.  Not that I don't like bears- I love bears! I'm just not sure how well it fits into the faction's theme. And why is he eating Twizzlers, and why are they bloody? (But I'm sure I could convert it to remove those)  Well, on the off chance your opponent fields the rare choice of mortal children with special attack: mock your baldness, you'll be ready to eat those children up!

Really not sure about the miniature of Non-egregious Jesus though. It's very static for one and kind of has a stoner-hippie-surfer vibe going: again, not sure it fits the theme. But maybe there will be an alt sculpt coming.
Better would be angry, in a tattered robe, hands out, like knocking over money changer tables style.
Bringing the smite-down.

-- none of this silly rambling is about the Dominion of the Gods game (so if offended, I get sole credit for that!), just the romp my mind takes when I see things like this.  Like I said, myth is fun and offers a lot of good gaming potential!

Enjoy!

Big & Small: Old & New

Last month I took part in, and got the narrowest of victories in the painting contest on The Warhammer Forum, with my Blood Bowl Apes, and the spoils of victory is to pick the theme for the next contest.

A couple years ago I tried to enter these every month. It was great fun, win or lose (since it's not really the point) and good motivation to paint and do something new or unexpected.  The contests began to suffer from a slow down- taking a very long time between contests, languishing in limbo as it waited weeks for a poll to be put up, and I lost interest since it just didn't seem to be happening. But seems to have renewed interest of late and more timely chugging along, which is great news.

The theme for this time, is 'Dynamic Duo': Two against the world.  So many great iconic characters and stories of two heroes facing impossible odds: Batman & Robin, Legolas & Gimli, Frodo & Sam, Lone Ranger & Tonto, Han & Chewie..I'm sure you can think of a lot of others too.

I'd thought I'd do a couple for Prehistoric Pulp, but then I thought about one of my (many) unstarted projects: the Halflings.  Awhile back I ordered a lot of Warploque Miniature's halflings-because they are awesome- and imagined they'd make a nice fantasy force for games like Songs of Blades & Heroes, or perhaps a fantasy skin of Saga.

I also am a big fan of old Citadel miniatures from the 80's era.  So when I run across a nice one I'll pick it up.

And so my two heroes are born- or, almost- they just need to be painted!

Halfling veteran and his Ogre compatriot.
These two have a long history and many tales of past battles.

This Ogre is from 1993, so nearly 20 years separate these two miniatures, but I think they make a great pair!
They have a similar character about them.

The Ogre I converted a bit. He was supposed to be a standard bearer.  But for a skirmish game, and being possibly the only Ogre to be in the halfling's force, I needed him to take a more active role.

So I converted the standard into a spear worthy of an Ogre!

I also de-skullified him.  His medalion had a skull face, and the pommel of his sword was a skull (as is the round thing hanging from a chain off the spear) so I shaved the skull icon off, and filed & rounded out the other two details.  Skulls are fine for chaos marauding ogres, but this fellow has long since settled into life among the halflings and they aren't too keen on such things.

I'm really looking forward to painting these two up!
See how good painting contests are?  It's got me to give the first step of attention to a project.

The contest deadline isn't until November 5th, so if you think of something you have lying around that you've wanted to paint, why not do it?  Any genre is open, so it doesn't have to be fantasy.  Check it out here

And in the meantime, if you have any suggestions for names for these two, let me know! :)

Room For One More: Fanticide Kickstarter

I am a bit worried that all of the amazing Kickstarters that have and continue to come out will start to jam each other in the doorway to our wallets. But I suppose it's like anything, it's something offered, and decide if it's something you want enough to trade money for. I couldn't resist some: D-Day Dice, Apes of Wrath (Blood Bowl Apes), Mantic Kings of War, The Banner Saga (a Norse/Viking setting computer game), and the Stonehaven Dwarves, and I'm considering Low Life and Dreadball.

But today I heard the voice: "Room for one more"

Call me crazy, but o.k., sign me up.

I am committed for: Fanticide.

The game has a good pedigree and I really like the motivation and mission:

- Skirmish gaming: not a ton of minis
- Rules not overly complicated, but a lot of options
- Card assisted play for activation & other effects: not a too-easy-to-predict standard igougo.
- Supports self-built warbands: construct your own concept of creatures for your warband if you wish.
- Follows on that of course: can use any minis you'd like.

The first four warbands they've come up with and definitely non-standard and quirky.  That's a good sign.

I also like the sound of the background of the world they developed, but what I like most is it sounds easy to use it for any setting you like or create, with any creatures you'd like to support.

I went in on the cheap, just the $45 pledge level, since I have -well I don't really know just how many minis I have- but a lot. And this looks like a good way to get double duty from some, and get some use for some of the odder minis too.  I have a whole bunch of Otherworld Kobolds that might be perfect for this!

They have some pretty good rewards with warbands from Eureka minis, including the monkeys I used for my Ape team's sideline band, so if you're looking to pick up some more odd minis, it's a good way, and if you're just looking for a skirmish game that's friendly for whatever you have already, seems good for that too

The $45 will get me the hardback color rulebook, the deck of cards, and 9 minis: 2 from each of their warbands plus the Unicorn. -the Unicorn in this world is apparently not at all like the one in Legend...
Seems like quite a good deal for just $45, and won't prevent me from possibly adding in Low Life, or Dreadball, or both...

But only 58 hours left to go until it ends: Tues. Sept 11, 13:52 EDT,so don't be caught sleeping...
