Arthur & Mordred: Climactic Clash

Earlier this year I participated in the Lead Painter's League challenge on the Lead Adventure Forum, and had a great time doing it.  - If I do it again next eyar i'll have to go back and add a tag for 'LPL' to those updates, in the meantime you can use the search function for 'LPL Round' and find the entries.

One of my worthy clashmates was Lead Asbestos, who had some nice Gladiators pitted against my Angels, after the week's contest he sent me a PM and asked if I'd be willing to paint the 2006 special Salute mini, which was a Dark Ages Arthur vrs Mordred battle duel. He had got a few and wanted to get some painters he liked to paint them, which was quite flattering of course and I also liked the idea of getting to paint the minis, since they looked very fun to paint. He was also kind enough to send me a bag of useful minis along with these two for future projects which may appear here soon.

So here's my take on the Salute duel:

I've seen some very nice versions of these. I had the same idea as some: red cloak and trimmed tunic for Arthur, for that Romano-Brit look. I went with a darker simple scheme for Mordred than most I've seen, to make him look more somber and sinister, since he's a villain in the story. It is also why I made the face of his helmet iron rather than bronze, just to keep it more dreary.  I also was aiming to have a cool tone on one side, warm tone on the other: blue vrs red.

This was very enjoyable to work on!  And made me eagerly anticipate a time when I might get around to painting some of my Saga minis: both historical and 'muppet' Elvorix!

Fun with fight scenes... enjoy!

As good as some of the other versions I´ve seen. Making Mordred darker works. There´s only one thing with the sculpt..the size of Mordreds spear head..

Really neat sculpt Ferret and very different from what I'm used to seeing you paint. As I would expect, you've done a fine job of painting it up!

Free figures you say, color me green!! Great clip btw!

Love the work. Well done.

Lovely work Ferret :)

I'd have been tempted to go for purple somewhere on Artorus' cloak or tunic to reflect the fact that he would have been of senatorial rank.

What a great job and lovely to see you paint something completely different. Great idea with using the colours to 'fight’ too, a success Sir!

Thanks for the feedback everyone, very happy to have it :)

Yes, it's made me itching to paint the Saga Normans I have that have been waiting & waiting ;)

Tamsin: I had the same thought at first too, but when thinking of it as a whole, knowing I'd want a dark blue for Mordred (didn't want to be so blatant as to go with straight black) I felt the purple & blue are too close for the hot/cold contrast clash I wanted, so back to ol' reliable roman red it had to be. If just an individual I think I'd have done some purple for him.

BTW, I'm posting the Cast of Characters for my story. I've got you listed as Top Secret. Your character is a pivotal one and I want to work up slowly to the reveal on the part you play. It would totally feck up my story to give it away at the outset.

You're fellow cast members are a fun bunch so stop by and see who else is playing along with you!

Great stuff there LF! Loving the work on this.. are you planning on doing more of these little sets or?

Thanks :)

MRLee: I don't have any of these sets (or any Salute minis- never been to it, since it's a bit far ;) , only had the one, and mailing it back to Mr. Asbestos this week. It has made me want to get to some of my saga minis though- I have some normans & vikings, though I might paint the Elvorix (muppet-ish looking dark ages fantasy creatures) first, since a friend of mine bought some of their adversaries and -in theory- is working on them.
