Just Roll With It

Well, it's been both a very busy and a very bad week.

The kind of week that makes you question what the point of anything is when it seems people are trying their hardest to make the world as terrible as they possibly can and prevent any common sense and modicum of kindness from having an effect enough to help you find a better way.

I also saw Cloud Atlas, which was a great movie, though I'm sure one of the central themes is "no matter where you live, and what age you're living in, you have something in common with everyone else in all times and places: the world sucks."

All of the problems are prevalent because so many are selfish cruel jerks enjoying making things worse for everyone else.  All those against you are far more powerful than you and your allies will ever be.  And really, aren't they just making everything worse for themselves too? And yet they persist.

But what can you do? What is the alternative?

So roll with it. Grab the hand of the one you love, share knowing smiles with your friends, and say fuck it to the rest.  And you just might find your chance to carve out a nook of happy life.
Or not, but you have to try right?

In that vein, here's a touch of fun a friend of mine forwarded to me:

Now, someone needs to make some minis of these :)  Hmmm...

As Sartre wrote: 'L'enfer, c'est les autres'('Hell is other people'). Misanthropic perhaps, but undoubtedly true in my experience!

Sound advice my good man; gone are the days when I thought I could change the world, but I'm damned if I'm going to let it change me.

In my experience people who make life difficult are desperatly trying to protect themselves from getting hurt and often launching offensive defences at people who weren't a threat in the first place because they have come to expect attacks as a matter of course. I noticed a similar pattern in abuse, a small number of those harmed by abuse become abusers themselves. It's like an infection. A small number of those infected go on to carry and spread the illness. Acquired brain injury works that way too. Sport, accidents or being assualted can damage the impulse-restraining parts of the brain leaving the person more prone to being violent who may therfore damage that part of anothers brain etc, last i heard the majority of people in Australian prisons have this kind of brain injury.

Sure 'economic man' the hyper-rationalist that only acts on deliberated reasoned thoughts is a cool idea(or is that ideal?) but we have to face facts, the conscious reasoning self is just a part of our decision making processes and unless we start to acknowledge the rest and take that into account in our consideration of ethics and behaviour then we will not successfully come to grips with the human condition.

We will only start to overcome this problem when we start to face its reality and begin both preventative measures and a treatment based response. And even if we do it will be generations before the problem is fully minimised.

So i wouldn't give up on the entire species nor attempts to nudge it towards health, but even idealists like me must accept that it won't be all fixed in one lifetime and we must keep ourselves in proper working condition if we are ever going to be able to help anyone else.

Fortunately a few good friends can make up for the annoying mass of humanity. Hope things pick up a LF. Love the video clip. That was funny.

Take care mate and try not to let it all get you down.
There are moments in life that can turn all that crap around, so look forward to those and ignore the rest of the static. :)
Cheers,
Ben.

Nice little post, and great little video. Also saw Cloud Atlas over the weekend. Can't say I overly enjoyed it though, but at least the popcorn was good?

And keep your chin up.. just remember there is somewhere out there that has it worse than you.. just think of Fran and who he has to work with ;) Always makes me smile and think it could be worse!
